The little scaup (papango) is also known as the widgeon or black teal. The male bird is darker with a distictive yellow eye, the female being browner with a brown eye. She also has a white nose-band when in breeding plumage.

The reference books say the scaup has fat feet - when on land it apparently looks like a child wearing its parents gumboots! Karen checked this out for herself.
